How dangerous are our water sources, both in the home and out?

Water is water, right? Actually, what you see isn’t always what you get. Any water source, from the kitchen tap to a backcountry stream, brings with it a variety of contaminants, some more dangerous than others. In fact, in 1993 more than 400,000 people in Milwaukee, Wisconsin fell ill after drinking tap water contaminated by cryptosporidium, a microbe resistant to chlorine. More than 100 died.

And you thought it was just water.

It may sound academic, but the fact is that all the water we drink today has been here since the beginning of time. Think about the hydrological cycle: from the moment a rain drop begins its decent to earth, it is subject to pollution, absorbing everything in its path. This can include lead, mercury, bacteria, asbestos, arsenic, chloroform, even formaldehyde.

Everyday sources of contamination.

Population growth, human waste, dumpsites, agricultural pesticides, fertilizers, animal waste, man-made hydro-carbons, toxic chemicals and acid rain – they all combine to contaminate our water supply.
